THE Sports Commission have said the podium-performance programme will be one of their guidelines for sport going forward.

National associations who are affiliated to the Sports Commission converged in Harare yesterday for a day-long workshop at which government’s policy on governance and the 100-day performance target was explained.

SRC acting director-general, Joseph Muchechetere, made a presentation and highlighted that associations need to ensure that they elevate the standards of sport as there was need for improvement in Zimbabwe’s performance around the globe.

“Podium performances are an urgent matter in the elevation of the sports and recreation in the country and the issue needs to be taken seriously. Once you volunteer to be part of a committee, you are responsible for the standards that sport is going to have.

“Why should our teams always be knocked out in the first round? We need to improve on that aspect, especially when we travel to places that are far away.

“We want to be part of the Olympics, Paralympics and Special Olympics because we are members of these international organisations and so we need to use that membership to the maximum,” he said.

Muchechetere said that there should be no discrimination in the choice of athletes in the national teams.

“Opportunities are to be made available to all persons in Zimbabwe because you never know where a great Olympic talent can come from,” he said.

He hailed the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee for their compliance.
