Karate tourney on tomorrow
ALL is set for the third edition of the Dominican Convent Clash of Titans interschools tournament set for tomorrow and indications are that it will be bigger than the one held last year.
Dominican Convent coach, Winston Nyanhete, said the tournament was on and they were expecting a huge turnout from all the provinces this year.
“We will be hosting our annual schools karate tournament on Saturday at Dominican Convent and this year we are looking forward to having more schools participating.
“The tournament is open for both primary and secondary schools and they will be competing in different categories.
“Last year we had a total of 31 schools with some coming all the way from the Midlands and this year we are expecting 35 schools.
“Registration is still going on and, so far, we have schools like Peterhouse, Prince Edward, Mubeena Ibrahim Primary, Falcon College and Kwekwe High who have confirmed.
“As you know we do not have more schools doing karate and we are anticipating as time goes on we will be having a whole lot of them,” he said.
Nyanhete added that schools should also consider taking karate as a sporting code.
“I’m urging schools to take up the sport. It is very competitive and it’s one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Besides competition there are many other benefits like physical and mental fitness for the students, self-confidence, self-discipline and personal growth,” he said.
Last year Dominican Convent School dominated the tournament when they scooped six gold medals.
“The competition started in 2015 and it was named the Clash of the Titans by the former Dominican Convent captains Naomi Mandengenda and Ruvimbo Madongorere as they were part of the elite karate athletes in Zimbabwe juniors.
“It is an opportunity for children in schools to showcase their Karate within the school system in front of other students.
“This competition helps to encourage the growth of Karate within schools around the country, promoting the participation of karate at school level.
“It is a platform for the provincial and national karate bodies to identify talent within the school system,” he said.
