Masvingo: Zanu-PF targets 160k new voters

- From George Maponga in MASVINGO

ZANU-PF targets to register an additional 160 000 new voters in Masvingo within the next month, as the ruling party pulls all the stops to make sure that at least 750 000 are registered ahead of this year’s elections.

The province managed to register 600 000 people by the time the biometric voter registration (BVR) blitz ended.

Zanu-PF’s Masvingo provincial chair Cde Ezra Chadzamira yesterday said the ruling party wanted to make sure that even people in remote districts such as Chiredzi and Mwenezi exercise their right to vote.

The ruling party, he said, was providing transport to ferry prospective voters to register at various district centres in the province.

“At the moment, we are at 78 percent (588 000 voters under BVR) in the province, and we are working flat out to make sure we reach more than 90 percent of our target or simply 100 percent(750 000 voters) by 16 April next month,’’ said Cde Chadzamira. “

Most of the prospective voters are finding it hard to travel to district registration centres because of distance and Zanu-PF has since started providing transport to ferry people from district centres across Masvingo so that they can register.’’

He said the ruling party was particularly concerned with the low number of people who had registered under BVR in Chiredzi and Mwenezi.

“Many people in remote parts of Chiredzi and Mwenezi had not registered to vote and we are working flat out to rectify the anomaly by providing transport to ferry them to district voter registration centres.
