GOVERNMENT yesterday pledged to protect Zimbabweans from cyber threats through the revitalisation of the country’s national strategy document on cyber security.

Addressing delegates at the Cyber Security Conference, which was held in Harare yesterday and organised by Zimpapers, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information Communication Technology and Cyber Security Engineer Samuel Kundishora said Government intends to strengthen national infrastructural security as this was vital to the security of the nation.

He said Government should coordinate its efforts with neighbouring countries, as cyber security threats were not limited to national borders.

“The Government’s vision in terms of cyber security is to make sure that Zimbabwe is secure, particularly the national information and communication infrastructure which has to be secure,” said Eng Kundishora.

“The information and the data must be secure for the safety of the citizens. This can only be done through the creation of a resilient communication infrastructure and this can protect the cyber security and it must also be done through a secure critical information services against the cyber attacks.”

SADC, said Eng Kundishora, had since developed the basic framework on cyber - security, which the country needed to domesticate.

He said Government created a platform through which Zimbabweans who wanted to assist Government with innovate solutions to curb such threats could contribute.

“The change of culture is important,” he said.

“You need to develop a culture that protects you and your information.

“We, as Government, have created the cyber security forum where citizens participate, like the one on internet governance, they are interlocked and we need to be protected as a country.

“People are free to inform the Government on how they want to be protected.”
