$1m project benefits Nyanga residents

- Manicaland Bureau Chief

NYANGA residents are now enjoying improved service delivery after council invested over $1 million in waste management, water and health facilities.

The project, which started in 2014, was bankrolled by the European Union and CAFOD (Catholic Agency for Overseas Development), while the rural district council and Caritas International were the implementing partners.

Nyanga RDC chief executive Mr Zefania Jaravaza told people gathered for the Sanitation for Success Project Sustainability Monitoring Visit held on Tuesday that the programme was an outcome of consultations done by stakeholders in 2012, which covered two urban wards —29 and 31.

“The major objective of the programme was to sustainably improve the living conditions, health, human dignity, economic productivity and the environment,’ he said.

“The project was run by a multi-stakeholder project steering committee, which was made up of all major players in the district.”

According to Mr Jaravaza, the local authority managed to procure a refuse compactor and refuse collection was now being done three times a week in eight suburbs.

“We also managed to install 40 bins in the two wards, while telecommunications company TelOne and the legislator for the area, Cde Supa Mandizwanzira

also chipped in with more bins,” he said.

“Eleven health clubs have also been established in Nyanga Urban and most of them are active and help to keep the

environment clean on a voluntary basis.”

Mr Jaravaza said 10 water tanks with a capacity to hold 5 000 litres had been installed in Nyanga Urban, with one incinerator being rehabilitated at Nyanga District Hospital.

The other projects that were undertaken include the construction of a squat toilet at Nyanga district administrator’s complex, five blocks of toilets at three schools, expansion of Nyamhuka Bus Terminus public toilet, construction of a one-kilometre sewer line and two septic tanks serving 114 households, including a capacity building training programme for council staff.

In a speech read on her behalf by director of provincial affairs in her office Mr Kennedy Mugarisanwa, Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs Cde Monica Mutsvangwa thanked the cooperating partners for supporting the project.

A delegation from the EU ambassador’s office, Murehwa district council and Nyanga council employees attended the event.
