Robbery earns man 7-month jail term
A CHITUNGWIZA man has been sentenced to seven months in prison for robbing a woman of valuables worth $232.
Tinei Magombo (27), jointly charged with Leonard Gorowa (28), appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Oliver Mudzongachiso for robbery and violating the Criminal Law and Codification Act.
Magombo pleaded guilty, while Gorowa denied the charges and will go for trial.
Mr Mudzongachiso initially sentenced Magombo to nine months in prison before setting aside two months on condition of good behaviour.
Gorowa was remanded in custody to April 23.
The prosecutor, Mr Edmond Ndambakuwa, proved that on April 7, at around 2130 hours, Tracy Muchemwa boarded a commuter omnibus in Makoni.
She disembarked at Chigovanyika in St Mary’s.
Mogombo emerged from the bush and grabbed Muchemwa’s handbag.
He stole a Lenovo tablet, clothes and $22. These were all valued at $232.
Muchemwa screamed for help and was rescued by Taurai Gwadingepi, who also managed to apprehend Magombo. Magombo implicated Gorowa. The matter was reported to the police. Valuables worth $212 were recovered.
Another Chitungwiza man, who stole bacon worth $25 from a supermarket was ordered to pay $30 fine by magistrate Yeukai Chigodora.
Munashe Gandiwe pleaded guilty to stealing the bacon, which was recovered.
Failure to pay the fine will see Gandiwe spending 10 days in jail.
