Mupfumira to build 12 tennis courts for Makonde

- Conrad Mupesa Mashonaland West Bureau

TWELVE schools in Makonde District will get a tennis court each following a cement donation from Senator Prisca Mupfumira.

The Zanu-PF national secretary for tourism and environment recently donated 72 bags of cement to be distributed to the schools.

This is part of Sen Mupfumira’s vision to increase opportunities among schoolchildren as enunciated in Government’s thrust to spread sport across Zimbabwe.

Mashonaland West provincial sport and recreational officer Mr Trust Gogwe confirmed the allocation during a report on Makonde Senator’s Sports Tournament launch.

“Following the speech by the guest of honour pointing to construction of low cost tennis courts in schools. The senator was moved to weigh in with a donation of 72 bags of cement to 12 schools in three constituencies under her jurisdiction,” he said.

In Chinhoyi Urban, the schools to benefit include Chaedza Primary School (where Cde Mupfumira did her primary education) and Chikonohono Primary School.

Schools to benefit in Mhangura constituency include Murereka Primary, Doma Primary, Richmond Primary, Chimanimani Secondary and Impala Downs Secondary.

Muchiedza, Matoranjera, St. Ruperts and Hombwe Primary schools in Makonde will also receive material to build low-cost tennis courts.

Mr Gogwe said that construction work had already started at some of the schools.

The Herald recently visited some of the schools in Chinhoyi were construction was already underway with indications that these would be complete by end of the second term.

Mr Gogwe also said Tennis Zimbabwe was working with the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation to share expertise in various sporting activities.

“The desire to take tennis to the grassroots through sport administrative structures from provincial, district down to the ward level as opposed to just having an association only operating at head office level has to be realised,” he said.

Tennis has been viewed as a sport for the elite with a few schools having tennis courts to develop more players at a tender age.
