Mash East ready for Uhuru celebrations
MASHONALAND East Provincial Affairs Minister David Musabayana has applauded the corporate world for supporting preparations for the Independence Day celebrations to be held tomorrow.
In an interview with The Herald yester- day, Minister Musabayana said the intervention of the business community has smoothened preparations for the commemorations.
“I am really amazed by the state of preparedness we have. We received overwhelming support from the corporate world and individuals. So far, the province has about 250 beasts to be slaughtered and we also have $250 000 which was mobilised within the province, which will be used for food and transport on Independence Day and I thank the province for that support.
“The province is now ready for the celebrations,” Minister Musabayana said.
Independence Day, he added, is incredibly significant to the province as it was a thoroughfare for guerrillas that prosecuted the Second Chimurenga.
“Independence Day is a special day to Mashonaland East Province because the province is close to Mozambique where our guerrillas - our brothers and sisters - crossed to Zimbabwe. It was a getaway into Zimbabwe battlefields, so our par- ents still have memories of what happened during the war and they understand the importance of these celebrations,” he said.
This year’s celebrations, he said, have added significance since the country is now under a new political administration that is determined to improve people’s livelihoods.
“This Independence is about our freedom, it is about economic freedom, human freedom, it is about the freedom to rule ourselves and our sovereignty.
“People went to war because of challenges of means of production. So Independence ushered in freedom to exploit our resources; that is, our land, minerals, only to mention a few, and with the new dispensation, we as the province will see massive investments coming our way,” he said.
He added: “We want Independence to move to the people, not people to travel long distances to celebration centres, so we will have at least 370 centres which will be dotted around the province where people will be celebrating.
“We have done this to reduce accidents because as you know, travelling long distances expose people to accidents and we want to avoid this at all costs.”
