ALL is now in place for this year’s Independence Day commemorations in the Midlands province with the provincial organising committee now tying up the loose ends ahead of the big day.

Traditionally, Independence Day commemorations in the Midlands province are held at Mkoba Stadium and tents have already been pitched ahead of the day.

Midlands provincial information officer Mr Edwill Moyo who is part of the committee overseeing the preparations said they were targeting to host about 20 000 people.

He said the committee has set a budget of $20 000 with the corporate world and individuals continuing to chip in with donations. Mr Moyo said this year’s commemorations were promising to be bigger and better with everyone looking forward to the day to be held under the new dispensation for the first time since independence.

“Remember it’s the first time that we are celebrating Independence under a new dispensation since the country liberated itself from the colonial rule in 1980.

“It has been commemorated year after year under similar circumstances but this time around, we have a new leadership and a new administration and everyone is raring to go,” he said.

Mr Moyo said Midlands was the heartbeat of the nation and the commemorations were expected to light up the nation just like the 1980 commemorations.

“It’s like we are under a new Zimbabwe with a new leadership and the preparations have raised a lot of excitement.

“As the heartbeat of the nation, we want our Independence commemorations to be remembered and resemble the enthusiasm of 1980 when we celebrated liberating ourselves from the cruel colonial rule.

“In November last year the country was ushered into a new dispensation and we are celebrating a new Zimbabwe again,” he said.
