Villagers urged to take up Command Poultry

- Sydney Mubaiwa in ZAKA

COMMUNAL farmers here have been encouraged to register for Command Poultry Programme, which is being rolled out by Government.

The programme is part of the Command Livestock initiative.

Addressing stakeholders at a recent full council meeting, Zaka District crop and livestock officer Mr Kennedy Pedzisai said Government sought to empower rural communities through poultry production.

Mr Pedzisai urged interested communal farmers to register with field crop and livestock officers in their areas.

“We are calling on all interested poultry producers to come and register for the programme that is anticipated to start soon.”

Mr Pedzisai appealed to Zaka Super Seeds that is based at Fuve-Panganai Irrigation Scheme to complement the command broiler programme by growing crops that are used in the production of poultry feeds.

“We are also calling on our communal farmers here to expand their production of small grains and make sure there are enough raw materials to make poultry feeds so that the command broiler programme becomes a resounding success, he said.

Mr Pedzisai said interested farmers should construct a fowl run with a holding capacity of at least 500 birds.

Government will assist beneficiaries under the programme to market their birds with some of the markets having already been identified.
