Educate children about Independence: War vets

- Sydney Mubaiwa in ZAKA

GOVERNMENT has been urged to broaden education on the country’s independence for students to appreciate the need to guard the nation’s sovereignty jealously.

Addressing hundreds of people during Independence celebrations held at Jerera Growth Point on Wednesday, Zaka War Veterans District chair Cde Handei Mufundisi said it was important for today’s youths and future generations to fully understand the magnitude of sacrifices made to bring freedom to Zimbabwe.

Cde Mufundisi said Government should play an active role in expanding the teaching of the country’s history so that the legacy of the fight for Zimbabwe’s independence is passed from generation to generation.

He said schools should organise trips to local liberation war shrines and those outside the country in places like Chimoio in Mozambique regularly to enable pupils to fully understand the country’s history.

“Today’s young generation should consider themselves lucky to be living in a peaceful and harmonious country and Government must take a step further in educating young people about the country’s history and sacrifices made by our leaders for Zimbabwe to be where it is today,” he said.

Cde Mufundisi said today’s youths were supposed to be the vanguard in the fight to preserve Zimbabwe’s sovereignty.

“When elections come, there are some people who will come trying to buy your votes so that you lose your sovereignty once again.

“Let’s always stand ready to counter the manoeuvres of such puppets and remain united in the hope that our country will never be a colony again,” said Cde Mufundisi.

The Zaka war veterans’ leader urged Zimbabweans to remain strong pointing out the current economic difficulties obtaining in the country were meant to force people to revolt against the Government.

He said Zimbabweans were supposed to rally behind President Mnangagwa in the coming elections and afford him more space and time to complete his mission of leading the country on a new socio-economic trajectory characterised by prosperity.

“Let us all rally behind President Mnangagwa and vote for him in the coming elections to make sure we preserve the gains of our independence. The new dispensation will see Zimbabwe’s economy growing under the President’s ‘Zimbabwe is open for business’ mantra.

“The country’s socio-economic status will be transformed through unlocking opportunities that abound when a country joins the community of other global nations,” Cde Mufundisi said. He also underscored the need to shun political violence before, during and after the coming elections saying Zimbabweans were one family and should peacefully co-exist despite political differences.

The Independence festivities in Zaka were marked by merry-making as people enjoyed food and drinks at the main district celebrations at Jerera.
