Miner axed in gold claim dispute
A MAN from Kwekwe is fighting for his life after being struck with an axe several times on the head and hands following a dispute over a gold mining claim.
Acting police spokesperson for Midlands Province, Assistant Inspector, Ethel Mukwende, said Artwell Siwecha was admitted at Shurugwi District Hospital where his condition was serious.
She said police had since arrested the suspect, Prince Mangena, following the incident, which occurred last Friday.
“Police in Shurugwi are investigating a case in which Artwell Siwecha (30) of Amaveni Kwekwe was struck with an axe several times on the head and arms by the suspect Prince Mangena after they had a misunderstanding over the ownership of a gold claim,” said Asst Insp Mukwende.
She said the two were having a discussion over the ownership of the claim in Shurugwi when a misunderstanding arose.
“During the discussion, Mangena had a small axe, which he was hiding in his jacket,” she said.
“When the misunderstanding ensued, he drew out the axe and struck Siwecha several times on the head and he sustained head injuries.
“As Siwecha tried to block further attacks he was injured on both hands.”
Asst Insp Mukwende said people who were around later intervened leading to Mangena’s arrest.
She urged members of the public to avoid using violence to settle disputes.
“People should try to engage a third party or follow legal procedures in disputes of this nature,” she said.
