DDF speeds up bridge construction in Mt Darwin

- Fungai Lupande Mash Central Bureau

THE District Development Fund has expedited the construction of a bridge linking Nyakasikana and Karanda Mission Hospital in Mt Darwin, which will shorten the distance to the hospital.

The bridge was not passable during the rainy season, forcing people, especially those seeking medical attention at the hospital to use longer routes.

The bridge is now 55 percent complete. DDF is also scheduled to construct a 15km road to the hospital.

DDF Mashonaland Central provincial coordinator Mr Kenny Clemence Mtombo said the initial quotation provided by other companies for the construction of the bridge was $8 million, but DDF only needed $3 million.

Speaking during a site visit on Tuesday, Mr Mtombo said construction work begun last year and was expected to be completed by October.

“Out of the $3 million we have used $310 000 so far. The bridge will provide the shortest route of 44km to the hospital compared to the Mudzengerere route, which is 60km and Nhoro route which is 62km,” said Mr Mtombo.

“The construction team is made up of 45 general hands drawn from the community and DDF skilled staff. We involved the community in the construction of their own bridge and we have created employment. The bridge will also benefit farmers in transporting their cotton and produce from Karanda to Mt Darwin depots.

“Construction of the bridge was part of our 100-day targets and we are happy that we managed to reach and surpass our target of 35 percent.”

Bindura District Administrator Mr Richard Chipfuva commended Government in the new dispensation for initiating such projects.
