Hospital in $1m upgrade
ZIMPLATS has completed a major facelift of Kadoma General Hospital worth more than $1 million.
The refurbishment of the hospital is expected to boost service delivery which had been severely affected by perennial water shortages, poor sanitation facilities and a poor transport system.
In an interview after visiting the hospital last week, Zimplats head of corporate affairs Mrs Busi Chindove said the infrastructure at the hospital was dilapidated.
“The general infrastructure was dilapidating at a fast rate since the hospital was built in the 1930s. The hospital had no water, which they had to buy and this was affecting the health care delivery system,” she said.
“Some facilities had not been working for more than 10 years while patients were being asked to bring their own water when they visit the hospital.”
She expressed hope that Zimplats’ intervention would ensure better service delivery.
Mrs Chindove said Zimplats was driven by the value to assist local communities.
“When the Government requested us to take part in this initiative, we did not hesitate at all.
“We are committed to sticking to our values which include care, respect and service delivery,” she said.
“It’s all about productivity and being part of the economic turnaround that beckons for Zimbabweans. For our productivity to improve we need our health delivery system to be functioning well.”
Kadoma General Hospital medical superintendent Dr Frankson Masiye hailed the assistance as timely.
“The hospital had grown in capacity and whatever machinery we had was not coping, so the intervention by Zimplats will enable us to do whatever activities we want to do,” he said.
“We now have enough water with 80 000-litre capacity tanks manned with booster and pressure pumps. Our toilets are now working, the sewer system is now fully functional. We also have a completely new laundry machine with its full equipment.”
He also hailed Zimplats for renovating almost every building at the hospital.
Zimplats also sponsored the erection of a new fence at the hospital while new ambulances have also been bought.
