Govt extends drought relief programme

- Blessings Chidakwa in KADOMA

GOVERNMENT has extended the drought relief maize distribution to villagers in Mashonaland West Province until the end of this month when villagers are expected to have started harvesting.

Mhondoro-Ngezi district administrator Mrs Fortunate Muzulu recently told a full council meeting that the maize would be distributed at ward level by a committee comprising the district administrator and local leadership including councillors.

“Government has extended the maize distribution programme to May, so councillors be prepared as deliveries will commence anytime soon,” she said.

Mrs Muzulu could not state the exact amount of maize to be distributed, but only ascertained that the allocated portion was ready for distribution.

Government has over the years been assisting hunger stricken areas with maize.

Meanwhile, Mrs Muzulu also took time to thank the outgoing councillors for a successful tenure in office.

“I take it this is your last full council meeting before the country holds its harmonised elections. Let me thank you for the services you have been rendering to this community,” she said.

“I hope you will be voted for again so that you continue the good works you initiated.

“There is greater need for continuity of these projects (being implemented in the district).”

The Zanu-PF-led council under the stewardship of party’s Central Committee member Cde Ephraim Chengeta has recorded remarkable success during its five year tenure.
