Zvishavane to upgrade solid waste management

- Locadia Mavhudzi Midlands Correspondent

ZVISHAVANE Town Council, which recently received a donation of a refuse compactor from Mimosa Mining Company is set to upgrade its solid waste management and maintain a clean town.

Zvishavane Town Secretary Tinoda Mukuti said the donation came at an opportune time and refuse collection in the mining town will improve.

“We now have two refuse compactors and three tractors which are enough to maintain the weekly collection of garbage in the residential areas and the central business district.

“The waste management equipment is enough for our town,” he said.

The town secretary said the refuse collection situation had not been consistent especially in high density suburbs as the tractors would sometimes break down.

He said the local authority would now focus on other critical components of solid and liquid waste disposal.

“We are now focusing on the resuscitation of the Mabhula Waste Water Treatment Plant to arrest sewer reticulation problems in the town.

“In this regard we have engaged the Infrastructure Development Bank of Zimbabwe and the project will commence this year,” he said.

Mr Mukuti expressed gratitude towards Mimosa for supporting the local authority in its quest to spruce up the image of the mining town.

“We are thankful for the overwhelming support that Mimosa gives to us.

“This is not the first time as they have supported other council projects on housing, health, education and infrastructure development. Mimosa has also refurbished Mandava Stadium and recently handed it over back to us,” he said.
