- Thupeyo Muleya Beitbridge Bureau

THE Beitbridge Municipality has entered into an agreement with Sanctuary Insurance Company that will see the later sponsoring this year’s edition of the mayor’s half marathon to be held on June 16.

The event will start at Lutumba Business Centre along the Beitbridge-Masvingo Highway and end in the town.

The race is part of an initiative to reduce cases of drug abuse and littering in the area.

Town clerk, Mr Loud Ramakgapola said the company had availed $5 000 for prizes, T-shirts and other related equipment for the race.

He said preparations for the race had also gathered momentum and registration of athletes had also begun.

“We are targeting a total of 350 runners and that the race will be held under the theme “Everyone against Drugs Abuse and Litter”.

“So, far we have registered 40 people while other athletics, clubs including Blanket Mine, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) and the Zimbabwe Prison Services (ZPS) among others have expressed an interest to bring in their athletes,” said Mr Ramakgapola. The idea is to use the race as a curtain raiser for the Victoria Falls Marathon to be held on July 1. We are inviting all those interested in participating to register at our offices.

“We are having the race for the third year running and building on the success of the previous two events.”

Mr Ramakgapola said the main event will be a 21km race, which will start at Lutumba Business Centre along the Masvingo road and finish.
