Gokwe offers MSU land

- Midlands Correspondent

GOKWE Town Council has resolved to avail 15 hectares to the Midlands State University (MSU) for the construction of a campus in the town.

Gokwe Town secretary Ms Mellania Mandeya confirmed the development and said the local authority was willing to increase the size depending on the type of development the university wants to do.

“We have resolved to allocate MSU a 15-hectare piece of land for the construction of their Gokwe campus,” she said.

“We will, however, increase it if they require some more depending on the construction and developments on the site. We will stop allocating land around the 15 hectares to give them room for expansion if the need arises.”

Ms Mandeya said the university’s campus in Gokwe will help develop the cotton growing town in many ways.

“Besides bringing tertiary education closer to the people of Gokwe, the institution will definitely bring development in our town and this is why we found it critical to allocate them a piece of land,” said Ms Mandeya.

Ms Mandeya said a lot of people in the district were being deprived of education as there were no institutions of higher and tertiary education in the area.

“Some cannot afford to pay rentals for their children to go and camp at colleges, but if we bring in more tertiary institutions then it will become relatively affordable, that way we empower our people,” she said.

MSU becomes the second university to be given land by Gokwe Town Council after Catholic University which was allocated about 20 hectares early this year.
