- Conrad Mupesa in MHANGURA

GOVERNMENT is working on establishing a nurse training school at the Makonde Christian Hospital here as the district’s referral hospital has the capacity to issue such courses, a senior Government official has said.

Addressing scores of people gathered at a “Hospital Day” organised by church leaders here last week, ZANU-PF Politburo emmber and Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs Senator Josaya Hungwe, who was a special guest said Government was seriously consider establishing a nursing school at the hospital.

The church together with schools, traditional leaders and business community in Mhangura held the Hospital Day to raise funds for the struggling institution.

The hospital is operating without an X-Ray machine and other required necessities.

“I will approach my superiors to see to it that a nursing school is established at this hospital as it has the infrastructure required,” said Senator Hungwe.

He said he would also engage Health and Child Welfare Minister Dr David Parirenyatwa as Government once proposed to establish a nursing school in Mhangura before the new dispensation.

He also applauded the church and local businessman Mr James Masango for helping the ailing hospital through various initiatives to raise funds to sustain it.

“I would like to thank all the well-wishers for playing a pivotal role in bailing out the hospital through various initiatives. As Government, we will do our best to bring to normalcy the current situation.”

Minister Hungwe said Government was pained by the lives of people in Mhangura who depended much on the mine.

“I’m also going to approach mines minister to see if he could send a team of geologists and specialists to this area and see if there is anything that can be done to revive mining activity in the area.”

Since Mhangura Mine closed, more than 1 500 workers that depended it have been finding the going tough.

Government, according to Minister Hungwe, was making conceited efforts re-open some mines, which closed over the years as a way of creating employment for its citizens.

He also urged party supporters to vote and ensure a resounding victory for ZANU-PF so that it fulfils its mandate established soon after Operation Restore Legacy.

Makonde Senator, who is also the Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Prisca Mupfumira and ZANU-PF Mhangura constituency candidate Cde Precious Chinhamo Masango were among the dignitaries that attended the event.

More than $3 000 and other non-monetary items to be converted to cash were received on the day for the development of the hospital.
