THE 2018 edition of the Zimbabwe Medical Association (ZiMA) scientific congress aimed at promoting evidence-based medicine, will be officially opened today.

The congress, which is being held in Harare under the theme “Professionalism and Medical Training”, started on Wednesday and ends on Sunday.

ZiMA secretary-general Dr Shingi Bopoto said the congress will provide doctors with a platform to disseminate information on topical issues in the health sector.

“As the Zimbabwe Medical Association every year in August we hold a scientific conference where we bring in the best minds in medicine locally and internationally to come and give us the latest information on various issues that are topical.

“We felt this year it is the global trend that topical issues are professional and training in medicine and will be focussing on that,” he said.

Dr Bopoto said delegates to the congress will discuss various topics such as robotic prostatectomy.

“Our congress will not be limited to that only, but there are other breakthrough programmes or breakthrough scientific papers.

“One of the highlights is robotic prostatectomy where we effectively use robots to do certain type of operations,” he said.

He also said the congress has both scientific and social sessions where research papers are presented to participants in fulfilment of their quest for continuous medical education.

“It will also promote the practice of evidence-based medicine to exhibition and sale of current world class equipment and medicines,” he said.

Health and Child Care Minister Dr David Parirenyatwa will be officiating at the official opening today.

“It has become a tradition where the sitting minister comes to officially launch the congress and we are privileged and honoured that this year our current Minister of Health Dr David Parirenyatwa will officially open our congress at 0900 hours,” he said.

ZiMA is a membership-based association whose objective is to protect and advance the interests of the medical profession in Zimbabwe, among other issues.
