COUNCILLORS Simbarashe Ziyambi (Ward 9) and Badwell Chasara (Ward 10) were elected chairpersons of Makonde and Hurungwe rural district councils respectively, following elections conducted last week.
In Makonde RDC, district administrator Joseph Manyurapasi presided over the election where Cllr Ziyambi got 13 votes against Cllr Admire Mupandaguta’s six votes.
Cllr Martha Paul Mapfumo (Ward 13) was elected the vice-chairperson unopposed.
In an interview after the election, Cllr Ziyambi said he was elated by the trust bestowed on him by other councillors and residents.
“I want to work tirelessly for the betterment of the district through engaging all the stakeholders and leaders so that Makonde is ranked the best amongst other districts in the country,” he said.
Cllr Ziyambi said he would work to improve social amenities, communication and roads.
In Hurungwe, there are 26 ZANU-PF councillors, who all took oath of office before council chief executive Mr Joram Misheck Moyo after which Cllr Chasara landed the chairmanship.
Cllr Rasiwe Banda (Ward 22), who was the vice-chair in the outgoing council, will now chair the social services committee, while Cllr Mubairo Gwanzura ( Ward 5 ) will lead the roads and planning committee.
The Agriculture and natural resources committee will be led by Cllr Dixon Jani (W9), while Cllr Spencer Pemhiwa (W4) will head the administration and human resources committee.
In an interview, Cllr Chasara said he would help steer council towards uplifting the rural communities of Hurungwe.
“I promise to work hard in full consultation with all stakeholders from all the 26 wards in Hurungwe,” he said. “Our foremost priority is to avail safe and clean drinking water to our communities followed by improving connectivity through rehabilitation of dilapidated and impassable roads.”
Cllr Chasara takes over from Alderman Tichaona Mathew, who lost to Hurungwe West Member of Parliament Cde Mary Mliswa in the ZANU-PF parliamentary primary election held in May.
