New classrooms for Selous school

- Fortunate Gora Mash West Correspondent

PUPILS at Ambuya MaFuyana Primary School in Selous will soon be ditching the dilapidated tobacco barns which they use for lessons following the construction of new state-of-the-art classrooms.

The construction was funded by Harare businessman, Mr Isaac Levy.

Speaking after touring the school, formerly known as Selous Primary School, on Friday last week, Primary and Secondary Education Minister, Professor Paul Mavhima, commended Mr Levy for committing himself to assisting the children.

The new school will have seven classroom blocks with two classes each.

“As Government we want to applaud Mr Isaac Levy who has been working through the Chegutu East Member of Parliament Honourable Webster Shamu to construct these classroom blocks from scratch since 2014.

“This will automatically yield to tangible results in our education sector,” he said.

The classroom blocks are already electrified and are accompanied by adequate ablution facilities. Mr Levy also pledged to construct the headmaster’s house.

Professor Mavhima said Mr Levy’s gesture had spurred Government to start the Ambuya Mafuyana Secondary School in January next year.

This, he said, would relieve some schoolchildren who had to walk long distances of about 15km to the nearest secondary schools.

“Two things have been happening, those who are determined have been going for about 15km from here to the nearest secondary school, but the less determined would just go up to Grade 7.

“We cannot waste the young lives like that. We have to provide schools so that they can continue with their education.”

To complement Mr Levy’s gesture, Professor Mavima said his ministry’s planning department would construct two semi-detached houses which would house at least four families to comfortably accommodate the teachers.

The school’s headmaster, Mr Boniface Deshe also applauded Mr Levy for the development which he said would boost the pass rate at the school. He also expressed his appreciation to Chegutu East legislator Cde Shamu for contributing immensely towards the development of the school.

“We have received quite a number of learning and teaching materials from him that had seen our pass rate improving from 12 percent to 27 percent,” he said.

Meanwhile, Cde Shamu is building and renovating other schools in his constituency including Marshal Hartley Primary School, Zimbo Junction Primary School, Mafuti Secondary School, Norwood Secondary School and Nyatsanga Secondary School.
