Youths commitment to agric applauded

- Victor Maphosa in MUTOKO

ZANU-PF youths here have been applauded for their commitment to agriculture.

The remarks were made by Mutoko South legislator Cde Hebert Shumbamhini during a field day held at Chitora Irrigation Scheme, where Zanu-PF youths in the district scooped the first prize in a competition organised by the Department of Irrigation in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Water, Climate and Rural Resettlement.

The Chitora Irrigation Scheme received $200 as prize money from the Department of Irrigation and three hectares worth of maize seed from Seed-Co.

Cde Shumbamhimi applauded the youths who won the first prize, saying agriculture was the backbone of the economy.

“Let me commend our youths who invested their time and other resources for this scheme to be where it is today,” he said.

“As we all know, Zimbabwe’s economic development is hinged on agriculture, it is commendable to see our youths immensely contributing to national development through agriculture.”

Cde Shumbamhini encouraged other youths from across the province to join their colleagues and participate in self-sustaining initiatives.

He said for Zimbabwe to be the bread basket of Africa again, youths should not be left behind in achieving that goal as they are the future leaders.

In an Interview with The Herald at Chitora Irrigation Scheme, Zanu-PF Mashonaland East youth chairman Cde Kelvin Mutsvairo commended his counterparts for working hard to be the best youths in farming across the Mutoko District.

He urged them not to relax, but to work even harder to achieve more.

Cde Mutsvairo appealed to Government to avail land to hard-working youths, saying the more land availed to them, the more the contribution to farming by the youths.

Zanu-PF Youth League national deputy chairperson for Labour and Production Cde Ernest Chamanga, who is also a farmer at Chitora Irrigation Scheme, commended Government for availing land and equipment to them.

“I want to thank our Government for this land, we are making a living out of it and there is no need for us to look for work, we are adequately employed here, we are able to take good care of our families,” he said.

“Let me also thank the Government for the irrigation equipment which we are using in this farm, because of the equipment, every day is an agricultural season for us.”
