MAN GUNNED DOWN IN CITY:
A 24-YEAR-OLD motorist yesterday fatally shot a 40-year-old man in the head following an altercation over parking space at the corner of Angwa Street and Nkwame Nkrumah Avenue near QV Pharmacy in Harare.
When The Herald visited the scene, the deceased’s body was covered with a cloth while police were battling to protect the motorist from an angry mob that was baying for his blood.
Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the shooting incident in a statement yesterday.
“Circumstances are that a 24-year-old man parked his Subaru car at the corner of Angwa Street and Nkwame Nkrumah, Harare and left his two sisters in the car while carrying out business in the central business district (CBD). Five men approached the sisters and demanded that the car be moved from where it was parked,” he said.
“A dispute arose and the two sisters called the owner of the vehicle to come back.
“When he came back, a scuffle ensued resulting in him drawing out a pistol.
“He then fired a shot, which resulted in the death of the 40-yearold man.
“The mob that had gathered then became violent and set the Subaru on fire.”
Asst Comm Nyathi said the police quickly moved in and managed to arrest the 24-year-old man and the four men who incited the violence.
He warned members of the public against interfering with the movement of traffic and allocation of parking space for motor vehicles in the CBD.
“The law will certainly take its course on people who engage in activities bent on hindering the maintenance of law and order.
“The ZRP is continuing to carry out investigations in this unfortunate shooting incident,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Community has dismissed social media claims that a Nigerian fired the gunshot.
Head of the Nigerian community welfare department Mr Smith Okonkwo said it was not their norm to move around with guns.
“We do not walk around with guns,” he said.
