GOVERNMENT has availed about $2.2m to Sanyati Rural District Council as part of the New Dispensation’s thrust to empower local authorities across the country.

Zimbabwe has 52 local authorities with Government having reportedly allocated each council a share from the national fiscal based on their priorities.

The $2.2m is a shot in the arm for Sanyati which is faced with a myriad of challenges including a poor road network, acute water challenges and poor health and learning facilities.

The RDC has since incorporated the funds into their 2019 budget with a view of embarking on income generating projects to enable them do away with the dependence syndrome on State funds.

Speaking on the side-lines of a full council meeting held recently, council’s chairman Councillor Patson Chakauya said the funds will assist them carry out its mandate efficiently.

“This is a welcome development for us as a council considering that our revenue collections were low this year due to a number of factors among them being in an election mode were some people were expecting write offs from Government,” he said.

Cllr Chakauya said among the council’s top priorities was to buy a rig, tipper and dowser.

“Borehole drilling is one viable business in the district and surrounding areas due to acute shortages of readily available water sources. Apart from hiring the rig it will also be used for council business,” he said.

“The tipper and dowser will serve a great deal in the rehabilitation of our roads most of which have outlived their lifespan.”

The completion of Zvakavamba Clinic in Ward 5 has also been put on the priorities list.

“The tipper and dowser will serve a great deal in the rehabilitation of our roads most of which have outlived their lifespan.”
