AIR Sports Federation of Zimbabwe are in the process of opening up model flight clubs countrywide to teach youths the art of recreational flying of aeroplanes.

ASFZ president, Lawrence Madamombe, said the move will benefit youths around the country.

“We are setting up clubs to teach young children on how to fly model aeroplanes and this will equip them scientifically on how to operate aeroplanes if they would want to do the course at an advanced level,” he said. Madamombe said the programme has been welcomed by several universities and high schools around the country.

“As we are moving around the country engaging some prospective stakeholders to partner us, it is overwhelming that universities such as University of Zimbabwe, through the Students Representative Committee, are in full support of our vision. “We have already acquired eight aeroplanes and opened three clubs around the provinces, one in Bulawayo, Mutare and in Ruwa and this is a positive sign for us towards achieving our goal to educate our youths,” said Madamombe.

ASFZ board member Wellington Mlotscwa, believes the programme will benefit the country’s tourism sector.

“We believe that if we receive full support from the Government and other private stakeholders, this project will not only benefit the youth but also our tourism industry as can be seen from some of our neighbouring countries such as Botswana and South Africa who are committed to it.

‘’Their tourism is benefiting from tourists who come to enjoy learning how to operate these aeroplanes,” said Mlotscwa.

The association is also arranging a seminar starting from January 22-26 in Harare targeting prospective instructors who can help to train the youth in all provinces of Zimbabwe.
