Chitungwiza to buy 150 skip bins
CHITUNGWIZA Municipality is planning to buy 150 skip bins to deal with refuse problems at popular sites around the dormitory town.
Acting town clerk Dr Tonderai Kasu confirmed the development in an interview yesterday.
“Council currently has 15 skip bins distributed all over Chitungwiza and for this year we have budgeted for 150 more,” he said. —
“We have, therefore, initiated a tendering process to buy these skip bins and we anticipate to advertise the tender soon after we finish drafting the specifications.”
Dr Kasu said the bins will be placed at shopping centres and in the industrial sites.
“It will assist in promoting and maintaining a clean and healthy environment for our people,” he said.
Chitungwiza and Manyame Rural Residents Association (CAMERA) director Mr Marvellous Khumalo applauded the local authority for making such an important decision.
“We give the municipality credit for making such a decision,” he said.
“It shows that they are concerned about the welfare of ratepayers unlike other councils that are busy buying luxury vehicles for their managers at the expense of service delivery. This will assist in keeping our town clean,” he said.
The local authority has been failing to collect refuse regularly due to depleted refuse fleet, fuel shortages among other challenges.
Recently, Government through the Civil Protection Unit, gave the municipality $197 800 and 5 000 litres of fuel to enable it to attend to sanitary issues.
In total, the local authority was granted 40 000 litres which will be released in batches of 5 000 litres. It has so far received the first allocation.
The fuel will facilitate the collection of refuse by council and the money will be used to hire more refuse trucks, purchasing of protective clothing and chemicals.
