US$ 600k facelift for hospital
ONE of the country’s biggest platinum miners, Mimosa Mines, has pumped US$600 000 into the refurbishment of Masvingo General Hospital, in a development expected to improve health delivery at the province’s biggest referral health institution.
Part of the funds were used to rehabilitate the water reticulation system while the theatre and laundry units were rebuilt at the health institution which has over the years benefited from Mimosa’s helping hand.
Mimosa spokesperson Mr Munyaradzi Hwengwere yesterday told
that the platinum mining giant would continue its community projects targeting hospitals and schools around the country.
“We refurbished a theatre and the laundry unit, including securing some of the laundry machines and attended to water reticulation challenges at a total cost of US$600 000. We literally rebuilt the laundry unit and installed some new machines,” said Mr Hwengwere.
He said there were changes on costs from the time the project was commissioned, which forced Mimosa to make financial adjustments to cater for increased costs.
“Initially, we had a figure of US$ 458 000 for the cost of completing the whole project before other needs emerged and resulting in the escalation of the total cost to US$600 000. We realised that there was no water and we attended to the water reticulation system,” he said.
Mr Hwengwere said Mimosa Mines was committed to change the lives of people through carrying out community projects.
“We will continue giving to the community, in improving people’s lives and that way we will be justifying our existence as a company working in the community. We have done similar projects in a number of urban and rural areas and we will continue giving back to the community,” he said.
The company has also donated to Chitungwiza General Hospital, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospital, Mpilo Hospital and also contributed to the Community Share Ownership Trust in Zvishavane, in the Midlands province.
Mimosa also chipped in to assist Cyclone Idai victims in Bikita, Masvingo, Zaka, Gutu and Chiredzi by donating a consignment of food stuffs that include, soap, cooking oil and mealie- meal.
