Ratify protocol on disability
PEOPLE with disabilities have urged Government to ratify the Africa Disability Protocol to promote their rights.
This came out at a sensitisation workshop held by the Office of the President and Cabinet on the Ratification of the Africa Disability Protocol.
The workshop was attended by senior Government officials, people with disabilities, chiefs and representatives from various organisations.
Officially opening the workshop, Africa Down Syndrome Network founder, Mr Kifita Kimbonyi, applauded Government for attaching importance to disability issues as evidenced by the appointment of an advisor to President on disability issues, Dr Joshua Malinga.
“In most African countries, people with disabilities are still struggling with recognition,” he said.
“Zimbabwe should ratify the African Disability Protocol as it is rooted in African society.
“We have myths and misconceptions concerning disability.”
Network of African Women representative, Mrs Roswita Mudarikwa, said the ratification of the protocol, would address cultural challenges that were being encountered by people with disabilities.
Dr Joshua Malinga said Government was responsible for providing services to people with disabilities and it was not the duty of charity organisations alone.
“Disability is a natural phenomenon, which should be given attention,” he said.
“The attitude of people should change towards people with disabilities as the disabled can do things that people without disabilities can do and even better.
“We want liberation. We want to be part of you, but we have been separated from others.”
