Mhondoro appeals for heroes’ acre

TRADITIONAL leaders and villagers in Mhondoro Ngezi District, are appealing to the Government for the establishment of a heroes acre in the area as they rely on Sanyati, more than 150km from their district.

Mhondoro-Ngezi Rural District Council was established in 2007 following the splitting of Kadoma District into two, leaving the newly formed district still relying with Kadoma now under Sanyati District.

The district is also reportedly still over relying on Kadoma for its services, with calls also recently having grown louder for Government to relocate officials who are still operating from that side.

Speaking at a recent meeting, Chief Mushava appealed for a heroes acre in Mhondoro-Ngezi.

“Heroes day in most instances we arrive late in Kadoma, Sanyati district due to the long distance, we need to have our own district heroes acre. Our gallant sons and daughters of the soil from this place deserve to rest in their own land,” he said.

Responding to the request by Chief Mushava, the District Administrator Ms Makepeace Muzenda said plans for the heroes acre were in pipeline.

“It is part of the plan for us as a district to have a heroes acre, but we need to follow the due process which involves to apply to Museum and Monuments. We also need a central place for the heroes acre and a committee should be set up to start the process.”

Meanwhile, all Government departments, including Lands, Agritex, Women’s Affairs, Mines, Education and Social Welfare are also still operating from Kadoma about 150km away from the district.

Chief Nyika is on record bemoaning the move saying it was a pity that the district offices were still in Kadoma, more than a decade after it was formed. He said it was a shame that their Government district offices were still in Kadoma, worse still the office that the district administrator is occupying is so small and does not befit her stature.
