‘Youths appreciate Govt fight against corruption’
A prominent Midlands young farmer has commended Government for showing its seriousness in the fight against corruption through the swearing in of a new Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission and the arrest of Environment, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Prisca Mupfumira on seven counts of graft.
Minister Mupfumira is the first senior Government official to be detained by the anti-fraud body since its overhaul in July.
In an interview on the sidelines of a soccer tournament for Chirumhanzu community at Holy Cross Mission School over the weekend, young champion farmer, Mr John Muchenje said the new dispensation was walking the talk.
He said youths in agriculture and business appreciated the effort by the new dispensation in the fight against corruption.
“The events of the past week emanating from the swearing in of the new Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission body and the arrest of Minister Mupfumira are a clear evidence to the fact that the new dispensation is keen on fighting corruption and as youths in business we commend Government for that,” he said.
“What is more pleasing is that ZACC says it has a list of over 200 prominent and allegedly corrupt people who might face the music and that will bring investor confidence.”
Mr Muchenje, who is also the Agricultural Ambassador for Germany based organisation DeutschConnect - an organisation that seeks to link Southern African Start Ups and Young Entrepreneurs with German business ecosystem - challenged young people to behave well and concentrate on school work since education is a key to success.
“As a prominent young farmer and a former student for this school, I urge those who have a great passion in agriculture to consider farming as a profession,” he said. “Zimbabwe is an Agro-based economy and I am seeing great business people coming from this sector.
“It is our responsibility as young farmers to nurture young children in agriculture for sustainable development. I have pledged my time and resources to make sure that the agricultural department of this school and other schools in the country function well and feeds this school and the surrounding community.”
Holy Cross Mission sports director Mr Benjamin Kwava thanked the Muchenje family for the gesture and support to the school and community through assisting in the soccer tournament.
The event was held to commemorate the late war veteran Cde Francis Muchenje who passed away 10 years ago.
Mr Kwava said the move was important and urged former students to emulate Mr Muchenje.
“Development starts with us all,” he said. “We are remembering our local leader who had the community at heart. This is also an opportunity for school kids to showcase their talent and we appreciate the gesture by the Muchenje family.”
