GOKWE South Rural District Council is in the process of constructing 22 new clinics as it seeks to improve health service delivery in the district.

The district, one of the biggest in the province, is also having existing clinics and health facilities renovated.

The council’s chief executive, Mr Silas Velani, said they had dedicated the largest chunk of their devolution funds towards improving health delivery system.

“We received $2,4 million from Government for devolution and we dedicated it to improving our health care system,” he said.

Mr Velani said 22 new clinics are at various stages of completion.

“We are, therefore, in the process of constructing new clinics across the district. Our major aim is that each of our 33 wards has a reliable health facility that is usable,” said Mr Velani.

He said existing clinics are also being renovated so that they become usable.

“We have some that might be complete, but are not yet operational we are therefore saying those should be renovated so that they become usable and that is a programme that should be completed by year-end, resources permitting,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Velani said Gokwe South RDC has also targeted alleviating water challenges through sinking boreholes in schools and communities.

“Under our water and sanitation programme we are targeting schools where we are sinking boreholes and upgrading toilets so that they become usable,” he said. “We have also channelled part of the devolution funds towards that as we seek to alleviate water challenges.”
