ZETDC sues Zinwa over $ 2m debt

THE Zimbabwe Electricit­y Transmissi­on and Distributi­on Company (ZETDC) is suing the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) at the High Court for close to $2 million of unpaid electricit­y bills.

ZETDC is seeking a High Court order compelling ZINWA to pay $1 989 086, 61 plus interest at the prescribed rate calculated from the date of issue of summons to date of full payment.

The power utility also wants costs of suit on a legal practition­er-client rate.

“The plaintiff claims payment of $ 1 989 086,61 owed by defendant as at August 31 this year, being charges in respect of electricit­y supplied by the plaintiff at the defendant’s special request,” read the summons.

“The debt is also in terms of the running electricit­y supply contract between the parties and which amount the defendant fails, neglects or refuses to pay despite demand.”

ZETDC added that because of the failure, neglect or refusal to pay the debt, ZINWA is obliged to pay the same with interest at the prescribed rate which is currently five percent per annum. GOVERNMENT has called on potential investors to prioritise the sugar and ethanol production value chain.

Officiatin­g at a sugar and ethanol indaba in Harare on Wednesday, Lands, Agricultur­e, Water, Climate and Rural Resettleme­nt Deputy Minister Vangelis Haritatos said investment in sugar and ethanol production will bring a lot of benefits to the country.

“In line with the President’s call for a Zimbabwe that is open for business, it is my wish to call upon local, regional and internatio­nal investors to invest along the sugar and ethanol production value chain,” he said.
