Beitbridge ups disinfections
BEITBRIDGE Municipality says it has received more support from corporates and local commercial farmers to scale up disinfection of public places as part of interventions to minimise the spread of Covid-19.
The local authority’s environmental health officer, Mr Pio Muchena, said they had so far disinfected the border post, Zesa Pension Fund Shopping Complex, service stations and all paved business centres.
He said they would continue disinfecting areas where there was high human activity after every 48 hours.
“We have been receiving support from many players, including commercial farmers,” said Mr Muchena. “One of them has already donated his tractor and workers to beef up the disinfecting team.
“Apart from the border post and other areas, we have also disinfected the NSSA Hotel which is being used as a quarantine centre for returnees from South Africa.”
The council has received hydrogen from Fossil Agro, which is being used to spray all paved areas. Mr Muchena said they would continue courting other stakeholders to build their capacity to minimise the spread of the disease in the border town.
“Besides spraying all public places, we continue rolling out awareness programmes to encourage people to comply with standard precautionary measures,” he said. “In some areas, our teams are moving around enforcing issues of hygiene, especially in those businesses that remain open, including vegetable markets.”
There are 10 service stations, 11 business centres, including those in the CBD and an estimated 500 vendors in Beitbridge trading mostly at Dulivhadzimu, Siyaso 1 and 2, Mashakada, Ha Mbedzi, Ha Mangavha, OJays, Shule- Shule and Mashavire.
