ZPCS seeks partners
THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services ( ZPCS) is seeking partners to assist in marketing and producing products being manufactured at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison for the benefit of prisoners.
Gellos Motorcycle Company has already partnered ZPCS and has promised to help them market their products.
In an interview, ZPCS Commissioner- General Moses Chihobvu said the inmates were undertaking various income generating projects, which will help them upon release.
“We are doing a lot of projects as ZPCS and we are seeking more partners to come on-board and work together to increase productivity as well as to gain skills and experience. Some of these projects are intended to feed the inmates, to assist them once they get out of prison and to generate income,” he said.
“We want inmates to manufacture school uniforms as well as their own attire. Every inmate must do hands- on jobs that will enable them to earn a living when they are reintegrated into society.”
The projects include tailoring, welding, motor mechanics, carpentry, plumbing and panel-beat
ing, among others.
The inmates were also doing other agricultural activities such as poultry and farming.
ZPCS has also engaged Foundations For Farming, which has helped in training prison officers in farming management as the organisation seeks to moves towards achieving food self-sufficiency from the prison lands,
Last year, ZPCS formally applied to Government seeking a licence to venture into commercial cannabis production at some of its prison farms.
