Telone plot strong comeback

- Curtworth Masango

GWERU-BASED side Premier Soccer League side, Telone are looking forward to beefing up their squad ahead of the new season.

Telone bounced back to the top flight after being relegated in 2019 and they are looking to make an impact.

Club president Oscah Nduwure said the club is going to unveil their new signings at the end of January as they are paving the way for their technical team to assess several players.

“We started our training already. Our coaches are assessing several players and it’s still an ongoing process,” he said.

“The club is basically still open to any players who will be available to be signed if the club is interested in them.

“We are waiting till the end of the month and then we can let the public know who the club would have brought on board. At the moment the club is assessing some of its prospects and is still open to welcoming new faces.

Zimpapers Sports understands that the club will be negotiating with the owners of Bata Stadium and Sheasham to use it for their home matches due to the costs that are needed to renovate Ascot.

Telone used Ascot for its home matches in the Zifa Central Region Division One campaign but the council-owned stadium is not in a state to host topflight games.

Nduwere believes the club learned from its last stint the importance of playing their home games in Gweru and promises the club will take all necessary steps to achieve that.

“This is not our first time being in the league, we saw ourselves being relegated sometime back and we hope we learned from our mistakes and we are coming back better.

“So initially our target is to survive relegation with a top 10 finish or something better. We believe we have to set everything right from the onset.

“Last time the issue of playing our games outside Gweru gave us challenges as our players suffered from fatigue and other costs, so it is our wish as a club to host our matches in Gweru.

“As a club, we can’t confirm yet which stadium we will be using for our home matches but our preference will be in Gweru and the club is doing procedures to get us there.”
