- Valerie Mpundu

ZIMPAPERS has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Zimbabwe Free Range Poultry Association in Harare to promote the vernacular based publications Umthunywa-Funda and Kwayedza-Dzidza.

The partnership is aimed at awarding schools that purchase the most newspapers. The winner gets 200 chicks and the runners up 100 chicks.

This project is set to take place in all the 10 provinces as an initiative to empower children and equip them with technical skills.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Zimpapers General Manager Marks Shayamano said: “This is quite a great initiative. We are equipping children who will go on to build and support their families as well as the nation, being the future generation. It is an important occasion for us today as this in line with the Vision 2030 mantra, “nyika inovakwa nevene vayo”.

“Who is better to build our nation than our future generation? Therefore we seek to empower them through the Umthunywa-Funda. The President said at least every homestead should have free-range chickens. This project is supporting the vision”

Chairman of the association Dr Aaron Golden Shamu speaking at the ceremony said: “Zimpapers, I am glad you are here, since 2015 we have been competing with broiler farmers as we are a free range poultry producer. This is a huge milestone for us and it is in line with Vision 2030.We are glad people are sharing our vision. When we started off, we used to produce 2 000 chicks weekly but now our production has increased tremendously. We now produce 40 000 chicks a week.”
