Noah celebrates ‘wonderful’ Emmy award

-

TREVOR Noah has been celebrating The Daily Show’s Emmy win, taking to his social media to express his gratitude to his team for receiving the award.

The Daily Show received an Emmy award for best variety talk series, which is the first time the show has won the award since prior host Jon Stewart’s final year on the show, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Noah posted a clip of the show winning the award on Instagram, writing in the caption:

“So . . . this happened. What a night last night! Big congrats again to the entire (The Daily Show) team! Thank you (the Television Academy) for this absolute honour!”

Noah also thanked the other talk show hosts who were nominated in the same category, such as Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert and his predecessor, Jon Stewart.

“Thank you for the support and camaraderie along the journey. Truly an honour to be in the same category with you,” Noah wrote. “Wow. Team Daily Show, we did it, baby!” Noah continued to post photos from the Emmy ceremony, expressing his appreciation and thanking “every single person who brought their magic” on The Daily Show’s team.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Noah is “the first Black person to win an Emmy for outstanding talk series”. The comedian reposted an image from the publication sharing the news, writing in the caption, “What an honour it is to make this kind of history on MLK day!”

The predecessor category for best variety talks series was the award for outstanding variety, music, or comedy series; the last time a person of colour received an honour in the predecessor category was when In Living Colour won the award in 1990.

Noah also gave a special shout-out to The Daily Show’s director David Paul Meyer, writing on his story:

“Partner in crime. Okay. We really don’t commit crimes together. But . . . he might do them without me. Police should [definitely] look into it. Congrats buddy. (sic)”

President Cyril Ramaphosa also congratulated Noah on X (formerly known as Twitter).

“Congratulations to (Trevor Noah) on winning a prestigious Emmy Award,” said Mr Ramaphosa.

“Winning outstanding talk series in a very competitive scene is no laughing matter. Trevor is part of a stellar cast of South Africans globally whose diverse talents and skills are enjoyed and valued wherever they go,” the president added.

During his Emmy acceptance speech, Noah said; “This story has been so long, so crazy, so wonderful. Thank you so much to the team and the person I always thank, the crazy genius Jon Stewart. Thank you for calling me up and asking me to come join you on this crazy journey.”

Noah also joked about ‘beating’ John Oliver’s show Last Week Tonight, which previously won in the talk series category seven years in a row. However, Oliver’s show was moved to the new scripted variety category, which it won.

This is Noah’s second Emmy, with The Daily Show winning the award for outstanding short-form variety series in 2017. — News24
