Cricketer Mavuta apologises over failed drug test

- Brandon Moyo Sports Reporter

ZIMBABWE international cricketer, Brandon Mavuta (26) has apologised to all stakeholders following his suspension from all forms of the game by Zimbabwe Cricket last year.

He was suspended by the board after he allegedly failed an anti-doping test in December last year and is awaiting disciplinary action.

In his statement, Mavuta apologised to all stakeholders whom he has been involved with for bringing their names into disrepute and assured them it will never happen again.

He added that he has since taken extra precautionary measures to make sure that something like that doesn’t happen again so as to protect his career.

“I would like to apologise to all stakeholders that are involved in my cricket career for the incident that happened in the last month. I am deeply sorry for how my actions affected the brands that I was associated with and the national team at large.

“I want to assure you all that It will not happen again as I now take extra precautions in my actions so that it doesn’t affect my career or the brands I represent,” read the statement.

He went on to add that is now time to focus on his cricket career and try to help the Chevrons and his franchise, Rhinos win games.

“I want to thank all the brands that were associated with me during the period and I also extend my gratitude to the brands that were with me throughout.

“Now it’s time to focus on my career and do best for my team Rhinos and the national team,” the statement concluded.

Mavuta and Wessly Madhevere were suspended and charged under the ZC code of conduct for players and team officials and are scheduled for a disciplinary hearing, whose dates are yet to be advised. Both Madhevere and Mavuta missed out on selection for the recently-ended Zimbabwe tour of Sri Lanka where the Chevrons played a white ball series against the Lions.

Mavuta made his international debut in 2018, and has so far played four Tests, 12 ODIs and 10 T20Is, while Madhevere, who first represented Zimbabwe in 2020, has featured in two Tests, 36 ODIs and 60 T20Is.
