CITY Academy was crowned champions of the Under-15 International Football Tournament, which was held in Chimoio, Mozambique.

The three-day tournament was organised by the Provincial Football Association of Manica.

City Academy used this tourney as part of their preparations for the Portugal Ibercup tournament to be held in July.

City Academy coach, Sean Guthrie, who was named coach of the tournament, expressed his delight at the performances of the team after dominating all their opponents and winning all their matches.

“I am very excited with the performances shown by our boys. The games were challenging but we stood our ground, the boys kept their composure and it helped us win all our games,” he said.

“The opponents here gave us a good run for our money and I am happy it was also a learning curve for our boys which will go a long way in boosting their confidence.

“Of course, we are not new to foreign trips but you know every day brings a new challenge and we prioritise every tour. We take it like it’s the first one and last one at the same time as we always focus on developing our boys to match anyone from any other academy in this world.

“As City Academy, we focus more on developing the young boys, we also make sure we install a winning mentality in the young boys. With that I can say our boys are doing a great job and the reason why you see many are interested to now learn from us,” he said.

One of the tournament organisers, Tomas Bonda, said City Academy was an important inclusion in the tournament.

“City Academy is very organised. Even before this tournament, I knew we could learn a lot from them as I have seen them before,” he said.

“So I was motivated that bringing them here could make us learn a lot from them and I am sure we have all learned a lot from them.

“They are good in a number of aspects and they are doing a very good job in terms of junior development in Zimbabwe and the region as well. We hope we will be able to incorporate some of the things we learned today in improving our boys.”
