Speaker on AI study visit to Sweden

- Zvamaida Murwira Senior Reporter

THE Speaker of Parliament, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, will lead a delegation on a study visit to Sweden and other countries next month to deepen appreciation of artificial intelligence which has increasingly become the anchor of science and technology.

The study visit by Parliamentarians will also include other areas such as the environment and climate change.

Adv Mudenda yesterday held a meeting with Sweden’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe Per Liindgarde at the new Parliament building in Mt Hampden in preparation for the visit.

Speaking soon after the meeting, Ambassador Lindgarde said he had briefed Adv Mudenda on his visit in the context of the Zimbabwe-Sweden bilateral relations.

“The reason for coming to see the Honourable Speaker is that he is planning to visit Sweden at the beginning of March. So the purpose of my coming was mainly to brief him about the relationship between Zimbabwe and Sweden, our development cooperation in Zimbabwe, his expectations among other issues,” he said.

“He is not only visiting Sweden but some other European countries. The purpose is mainly an exchange of ideas to study how the Swedish parliament works and also to look at other issues he has an interest in like the environment, climate change and how we are tackling artificial intelligence. These are some of the areas he will be looking at.”

Adv Mudenda is on record calling for laws that promote the use of artificial intelligence in the implementation of national policies as that would help the country to realise its developmental goals, that of attaining an upper-middle-income economy.

Globally, artificial intelligence is now a key anchor of science and technology in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Ambassador Lindgarde said Zimbabwe and Sweden enjoyed good bilateral relations and Sweden has been involved in many developmental projects in the country in many sectors that include climate change, environment and democracy among others. ◆
