Mabvuku community celebrates Youth Day through sport
THE Mabvuku, Tafara Development Council held their inaugural Robert Gabriel Youth Day celebrations through sport at Mabvuku Number One Grounds with several community clubs taking part.
The tournament saw several teams from the community battling it out for a floating trophy and medals which were at stake.
Aimed at celebrating the Youth Day holiday and the Second Republic’s fight against drug and substance abuse within the youth, the tournament received a lot of support from the community and the constituency representative Pedzai “Scott” Sakupwanya.
Chief of protocol, Tendai “T bunz” Zhakata hailed the event and stressed the importance of putting structures for talent development through sport.
“Mabvuku is a community with a rich history of producing sports superstars.
“We have a number of superstars who rose to stardom from Mabvuku in many different sporting disciplines including football, rugby, cricket, basketball and cricket among others.
“So today we have come together with a leading football tournament focusing on the Under 15s.
“We have to help groom these young boys and keep them away from dangers that loom around waiting to devour them.
“Thus we are using football as a tool to instil discipline among them. They have to be aware of the consequences of getting involved in drug abuse and other illicit activities as we prepare them for adulthood.
“We have Honourable Scott Sakupwanya, who has given us his support and promised to develop the Number One Grounds through community development funds and we understand it will be face-lifted into a top notch sporting facility.”
The chairman of the development committee council, Nobert Njazi, said they are working hard to uplift the community and the work has been made easy through the commitment of Sakupwanya.
“Our leader is inclusive of everyone. He has called for everyone to come and be part of this community development trust. It is meant to spearhead development basing on the aspect of empowering the youths.
“Drugs are soaring in the community and we can’t just sit at the back and watch. We have a mandate to play and by so doing we are leading the initiative by bringing everyone together,” added Njazi.
