On your marks. . .Zimuto flexes for CBZ Marathon
CBZ Marathon defending champion Tendai Zimuto is going into this year’s edition with an open mind as he said he has just recovered from an injury.
The race organised by Harare Athletic Club takes place tomorrow and Zimuto will be on the starting line at Old Georgians Sports Club.
There is also a half marathon, 21km wheelchair, 10km and 5km races on the card. Zimuto is currently in camp together with Isaac Mpofu, training under the guidance of seasoned coach Benson Chauke.
Zimuto is also preparing for an Olympic qualifier of which Mpofu has already booked his ticket for the Paris showcase.
“I am just going to compete as part of my preparations for other upcoming races, if anything else comes out of it then it’s a bonus.
“I am not yet at my peak to promise much, since I am just starting building up for the season. I am coming from an injury and I just want to assess myself.
“I had a hamstring since last year and only started serious training in January with Isaac when I came for this camp in January,” said Zimuto.
CBZ Group chief marketing and corporate affairs Officer Matilda Nyathi said they are hopeful of another exciting event as the race has continued to grow over the years.
“An elevated experience, with an expectation of excellence and camaraderie.
“The CBZ Marathon is known for its challenging course on 42km race. The course takes runners through scenic landscapes, but make no mistake, the terrain has its difficult routes with steep hills, uneven terrain, and gruelling climbs.
“Entries for the 2024 CBZ Marathon opened on the 23rd of February, and were closed on the same day after full registration,” said Nyathi.
The race attracts some of the country’s top distance runners. The likes of Jonathan Chinyoka, Wellington Varevi, Blessing Waison, Moses Tarakinyu, Rudo Mhonderwa, Ethel Pangiso, Melody Chikonzi, Kudzai Pasipanodya and Arnold Taruvinga are expected to be part of this year’s edition.
Nyathi believes the race has made a positive impact on the local scene promoting local talent.
“It empowers local athletes by providing a platform for them to showcase skills and compete on a national and international level.
“The CBZ Marathon is a qualifier for the comrades and Two Oceans Marathon.
“One other way is through its ability to uncover hidden gems as the race attracts runners of all levels, from those who have never competed in a marathon before to seasoned veterans. This creates an opportunity for local athletes to showcase their skills and gain recognition.
“Moreover, the CBZ Marathon fosters a sense of community and camaraderie among local runners. The race attracts thousands of participants who come together in support of the event.
“This sense of community encourages collaboration and sharing of knowledge and experiences, allowing local athletes to learn from and support one another,” said Nyathi
Winners for the 42km race will receive US$1 000. For the 21km Open and 21km wheelchair the winners will get US$500
