THE Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Torerayi Moyo yesterday officially opened a US$1,7 million state-ofart Advanced Level learning centre at the Salvation Army-run Mazowe High School in Mashonaland Central.

He commended parents for playing a leading role in the development of the learning institution.

The facility has 32 rooms that comprise 14 classrooms and 18 offices.

The event was graced by a high-level delegation from Salvation Army Church members from Botswana and locals, parents, former students and prominent musicians Pastor Charles Charamba and his wife Olivia, whose children are also learners at the institution.

Minister Moyo said Mazowe High is known for good pass rates, therefore the construction of the Advanced Level Learning Centre will improve the quality of education.

“Today we celebrate the remarkable efforts of Mazowe High School Development Committee to improve the school amenities and create a conducive environment suitable for teaching in Mashonaland Central Province. It is through education that we empower our young minds, equip them with knowledge, and prepare them to face the challenges of the future,” he said.

He said the learning facility is a significant step in the education landscape.

“It is designed to offer a conducive environment for Advanced Level studies, providing specialised resources, state-of-art facilities, and a curriculum that promotes critical thinking, creativity, and innovation. We recognise the importance of providing equal opportunities to all students regardless of their background or circumstances.

“With this centre, we aim to bridge the gap between urban and rural areas by ensuring that students from various regions have access to high quality education and the resources necessary for quality and equitable education,” he said.

He commended, parents for moving in line with the Ministry’s strategic plan of constructing, rehabilitating and refurbishing school infrastructure for inclusivity.

“Parents of this school have made true of the saying that a school is as good as its parents. We applaud them for paying school levies timeously for the benefit of children. What encouraged me the most is the fact that this massive structure was built without external funding. This is an exhibition of the logical mantra of His Excellency the President of Zimbabwe Dr ED Mnangagwa of ‘Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo’.”

The School Development Association chairperson, Mr Stern Zvavamwe, a former pupil at the school, and the brains behind the project said the Advanced Level students used to conduct their lessons in the library due to limited space.

“We constructed this block to the tune of US$1,7 million in 2017. We can safely say it is the biggest historic building in Mashonaland Central and we thank parents who contributed tirelessly in cash and kind. I hope that we keep this complex well and to good use for future generations,” he said.

Also in attendance were Chiefs Negomo and Chiweshe.
