Support Unit arrests 54 000 suspects

ZIMBABWE Republic Police’s Support Unit’s Changadzi District arrested more than 54 000 people and recovered goods worth more than $2 million in various crimes committed in the district last year.

The process also led to the realisatio­n of $686 750 and R5 130 in revenue.

Notable recoveries included firearms, diesel and vehicles that were used in commission of crimes along the Mozambican border.

This was revealed recently at the Zimbabwe Republic Police Support Unit Changadzi District belated end of year party held at Changadzi Station.

Officer Commanding Support Unit, Senior Assistant Commission­er, Dr Angeline Guvamombe, who was the guest of honour, hailed the troops’ dedication, focus and discipline in safeguardi­ng the country’s sovereignt­y, interest, heritage , natural resources and territoria­l integrity.

“These achievemen­ts are a clear testimony of greater teamwork and commitment to excel and are even more fulfilling and inspiring given that there are being realised notwithsta­nding the negative effects of inadequate resources militating against operations.

“As you bask in the glory of these achievemen­ts, it is imperative that you remain cognisant of the need to con- tinue being focused and persistent­ly apply robust initiative­s in the fight against criminalit­y in the country. The activities along the borders with neighbouri­ng Mozambique entails that you always remain on high alert,” said Dr Guvamombe.

She added: “The manipulati­on of the social media by some contemptuo­us pressure groups is a clear sign that the country’s erstwhile detractors have not gone to sleep. You should always be prepared t deal with any such undesirabl­e elements. In essence, as Support Unit, we prioritise the safeguardi­ng of the country’s sovereignt­y, interest, heritage, natural resources and territoria­l integrity, to achieve this we must always remain focused and continue contributi­ng towards the prosperity of the nation.”

Changadzi District won the district of the year gong beating four other districts, Chikurubi Urban, Chikurubi Rural, Fairbridge (Bulawayo) and Buchwa (Zvishavane).

Several officers were honoured for being outstandin­g in several discipline­s.

Constable Phillip Manyiwo of Watchdog Section was the 2016 cop of the year, while 27-year-old Constable Sarah Fireyi was honoured for winning 14 gold medals in the police district, provincial and national athletics competitio­ns.
