IT SEEMS the sky is the limit for budding artiste and Nyamauru High School pupil, Mitchelle Muchemwa who recently won the Best Mbira Music Award at a music awards ceremony organised by the National Gallery of Zimbabwe.

The event which was held at Mutare Boys High School focused on promoting the art and culture industry through engaging young adults from various schools in Manicaland to showcase their visual and perform- ing talents.

Mitchelle, who is currently doing her Advanced Level studies, outshone all competitors and was in cloud nine when interviewed by Weekender Entertainment.

“I am totally speechless. I am so happy. I never thought I would win this award. It’s an honour. It was a tough competition.

‘‘I am proud that I lifted my school’s flag high. It is so encouraging and motivating,’’ said Mitchelle.

She bemoaned the lack of support by stakeholders saying the mbira music sector would grow only if it gets support.

“It is a sector that needs support. It is quite unfortunate that a few people also love playing the instrument. I believe the accolade will inspire aspiring mbira players who are either discouraged or shy,” said the teenager who became the first female student to ever win the award in that category.

“I will try my best to handle my passion for mbira and education.

‘‘I have to concentrate on both areas and make sure that I balance the two,” she added.
