A SEVEN- YEAR- OLD boy from Muzokomba area in Buhera District drowned in a well last Sunday.

Deputy Manicaland police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda confirmed the incident that happened at Mudhabha homestead in Diripo Village under Chief Nyashanu on September 3.

He said the late Ellison Makichi was fetching water from a 25-metre-deep well in the company of his 13-year-old sister when he drowned.

“The boy was fetching water with his sister when he was entangled by the rope that they were using to fetch water from a 25-metre-deep well.

“He fell into the well and his sister screamed for help.

“Tukai Matanga (42) of the same village rushed to the scene and jumped into the well, but his efforts were in vain since the boy was already dead. He successfully retrieved the body and advised the boy’s grandmother, Sophia Nyamusungo (67).

“A report was made to the police who attended the scene,” said Asst Insp Chananda.

Ass Insp Chananda warned parents to keep an eye on their children to avoid such incidents.

“We urge parents and guardians not to leave their children unattended.

“Such incidents could be avoided if parents keep a close eye on their children. It is also important for people to ensure that their wells are covered and well protected,” said Asst Insp Chananda.
