Supermarket donates to prison

- Post Correspondent

FOUR infants that are currently in prison with their incarcerated mothers recently benefited from Mutare Spar Supermaket’s benevolence after the latter donated an assortment of goods ranging from 100 diapers, 100 cotton wool rolls to laundry soap and petroleum jelly.

The mothers are inmates at Mutare Remand Prison where they are serving sentences for various offences and are failing to provide for the infants’ basic requirements.

The plight of the infants came to Mutare Spar’s attention after a member of the Victim Friendly Coordinating Committee ( VFCC), Mr Shame Isaki, learnt from the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services ( ZPCS) that the infants were in dire need of basics.

“Prison Services are part of VFCC whose major function is to coordinate efforts on child abuse cases and ensure efficiency in the handling of matters involving children while disseminating information on the need for the public to participate in supporting children’s cause.

“ZPCS, schools, children welfare organisations and others make up the VFCC that is chaired by the court and seeks to protect the rights and welfare of children,” commented Mr Isaki.

Mr Isaki revealed that after Prison Services reported that they needed help for the infants, he approached Spar general manager Mr Huston Munyoro, who also reacted positively by extending the donation on behalf of his company.

This was not the first time that Mutare Spar has donated goods to Mutare Remand Prison.

The Officer-in- Charge of Mutare Remand Prison, Superintendent Maplan Kakoto, Provincial Chaplain Superintendent Chiwenga and Station Chaplain Chiratidzo Ndaona expressed gratitude for the donation and encouraged the community to continue supporting them and others that might need help in different forms.

Mutare Remand Prison is home to 454 inmates of whom are females. Its normal holding capacity is 370 inmates.
