Zim must be ready to counter climate change adverse effects
EDITOR — Changes in climate have a negative impact on the economy. Various sectors such as mining, agriculture, tourism and energy are directly impacted.
It is good that money has been provided to minimise the negative impacts that climate change has on development. Buildings and infrastructure can be highly vulnerable to climate change.
This is bad for humanity as it hinders production. We have had numerous reports about damage caused to electricity poles and cables due to heavy rains.
These also have resulted in production slowing down and even loss of life. Our agricultural sector neither should not depend on climate entirely for production.
There a various investments that can be made so that there is flexibility in this sector. One of the things that can be done to improve agriculture is making sure there is a network of irrigation systems.
We cannot afford to fluctuate in the performance of this sector. The only change that is welcome is that of improvement. Zimbabwe is a favourable country to tourists because of its friendly climatic conditions. A lot of facilities have to be put up to avoid loss of tourists because of harsh climatic conditions.
All these sectors need attention in terms of introducing adaptability measures to climate change. Progress in Zimbabwe should always be ongoing regardless of prevailing climatic conditions.
