Miss Summer Diamond City on tomorrow

TOMORROW (Saturday) will see beauties from across Manicaland Province strutting their stuff on the catwalk while vying for the Miss Summer Diamond City crown at Courtauld Theatre.

In an interview, Miss Diamond City beauty pageant organiser Wayne ‘Detroit’ Tembenuka said the event was all about recognising the girl child, drawing her from her comfort zone and putting her on a higher level.

“We are all about uplifting the girl child from the stereotyping that she has endured since time immemorial that her place is in the kitchen. This time around, the girl child is embracing her talents and going international through the pageant,” said Detroit.

He also said the pageant would also raise awareness against early child marriages and pregnancies.

“The contestants are drawn from across Manicaland Province only because this is for beauties from places around Mutare which has been christened the ‘Diamond City’. We cannot have a Miss Summer Diamond City from Harare,” he said.

The re-emergence of the pageant two years after it had gone off the radar is a sure sign that the city still has the girl child at heart, said Detroit.

He promised that it would be an annual event.

Turning the turntables, doing what he knows best will be DJ Young G who promised fireworks to those who will make it to the event.

Said DJ Young G: “We are promising you fireworks. This will go a long way in history as everyone who will be there will be advocating for the girl child and fighting against those who have been oppressing her talent.

“It is time for her to stand up and go international and Saturday will be a starting point for these girls. If you, like us, are rallying behind these girls, then you definitely have to show up at Courtauld Theatre on Saturday.”

Taking to the stage on the day will be Mutare’s own “Perfect to Me” hitmaker, CAFF and local dance groups, Reflections, FFMAC, Clarks Warriors,

KC Made In Zim, Hokkus Pokkus Records and iRobot.
